Ojai Valley Retreat
Ojai, CA
Completed in 2025
A MIST Architects project, in collaboration with Michael Sharf Design
Tucked away on the western edge of Ojai, CA, this once dilapidated home built from re-used WWII Quonset huts reemerges remodeled as a flowing, light-filled retreat for the artist/builder client Michael Sharf.
The home’s history stems from the post-war 1940’s, when it was amassed from three different repurposed military Quonset huts. While efficient and enduring, the home lacked continuity and comfort. MIST Architects, in collaboration with the client as builder, reconfigured and reimagined the space’s possibilities within the existing footprint to create a natural, connected, and purposeful home complete with the client’s own artistic detailing. Smooth, rounded plaster ceilings glorify the Quonset form, while warm natural wood and cool site-poured concrete tones bring harmony to this valley oasis. Skylights were placed strategically, walls were removed for more open flow, and modern yet tactile materials were chosen to balance the collaboration’s artistic light with the peaceful country surroundings. Built entirely by the client, this dream collaboration between artist and architect yielded a truly one-of-a-kind home that fits perfectly within the unique nature of Ojai.
The Ojai Valley Retreat maximizes the forgotten potential of this Quonset hut home to bring the client’s welcoming, timeless, and tranquil artistic vision to life.
