Altadena Passive House
Altadena, CA
Designed in 2025
A MIST Architects Project
2025 California Rebuilds Competition 2nd Place Award
After wildfires tragically destroyed much of Altadena, the Passive House Network set out a call for designs
Set along East Altadena drive in Altadena, CA, this passive house combines the best of Los Angeles’ historic craftsman character with modern flair and high performance building assemblies for a brighter future that honors the past. A fire-resistive, air-tight enclosure is achieved using standard 2x framing techniques to ensure this home remains a classic comfort for decades to come.
The home’s design truly celebrates all the site has to offer and provides a refuge for sustainable enjoyment of this uniquely beautiful yet fragile place. Completed as part of EYRC Architects, this remodel was the 2023 AIA CA Residential Design Honor Award winner.
"Refinement! This project is strong, very assured, and utilizes great materials, it has almost a Mies-ian quality. This project has a beautiful connection to outdoor spaces." - Jury Comments, 2023 AIA California Residential Architecture Awards.
